On September 3, PM Narendra Modi also visited the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Brunei, a historical structure built during the reign of the father of the current Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.
Currently on a two-nation tour, Modi received a warm welcome at the mosque by Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Dato Ustaz Awang Badaruddin and Minister of Health Mohammad Isham. He was taken through a video presentation on the history of the mosque.
"Visited the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Brunei," Modi said in a post on X.
Completed in 1958 and named after Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei and father of the present Sultan, who commissioned its construction, the mosque is a monument representing the rich cultural heritage of Brunei.
The Indian community, which is estimated around 14,000 in Brunei, also held a mass gathering to welcome the Prime Minister. Modi's visit is historic because this is the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei. Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Brunei in October 2013 to attend the 11th ASEAN-India Summit.
Brunei represents a significant partnership within India's 'Act East' Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision. The relationship between the two countries has been based on a legacy of friendship that dates back several centuries, steeped in history, culture, and tradition, reflecting mutual respect and cooperation on various bilateral and multilateral issues.
