Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to make a historic trip to Ukraine on August 23, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1992, according to an announcement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday.

This visit is particularly significant as it represents the first time an Indian PM has traveled to Ukraine in over three decades. “This landmark visit will enhance the recent high-level exchanges between the two nations,” stated Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West) at the MEA. Notably, August 23 coincides with Ukraine’s National Flag Day.

The Ukrainian President’s office indicated that discussions between PM Modi and President Zelensky will focus on various aspects of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, and several agreements are anticipated to be signed during the visit. PM Modi had previously met President Zelensky on June 14 at the 50th G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy, describing their dialogue as “very productive.”

During that meeting, PM Modi reaffirmed India's commitment to supporting a peaceful resolution to the conflict. “Had a very productive meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky. India is eager to further cement bilateral relations with Ukraine. Regarding the ongoing hostilities, reiterated that India believes in a human-centric approach and believes that the way to peace is through dialogue and diplomacy,” PM Modi shared on X following the summit.

President Zelensky had also reached out to PM Modi to congratulate him on his election win and express hope for a visit to Ukraine soon. “Everyone in the world recognises the significance and weight of India’s role in global affairs. It is critical that we all work together to ensure a just peace for all nations,” Zelensky had posted on X after the results of the Lok Sabha elections.

Throughout the Russia-Ukraine conflict, India has maintained a balanced stance, advocating for a diplomatic resolution while providing substantial humanitarian aid to Kyiv, including essential medicines and medical supplies. Before heading to Ukraine, PM Modi will first visit Poland on August 21, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland in 45 years. “Prime Minister will be accorded a ceremonial welcome in Warsaw. He will meet with President Andrzej Sebastian Duda and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Additionally, the Prime Minister will interact with the Indian community in Poland,” the MEA noted.
