The 'Iron Lady of India' is the popular, yet somewhat ironical, sobriquet given to Indira Gandhi, who was born on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, into the Kashmiri Pandit family. She was Jawaharlal Nehru's daughter, also known as India's first Prime Minister, and Kamala Nehru.
November 19 is National Integration Day, both commemorating her birthday and paying tribute to her pivotal role in the political, social, and economic travels of India.
With India developing further as a global power, National Integration Day is a reminder of how far Gandhi had taken the effort in unifying this nation. Indian National Congress created this observance in 1985 in honor of her efforts in promoting unity.
The day is of great significance. On this day, Indians celebrate India's diversity and recognize that everything for the development of the country comes by way of collective effort.
During the period she served as the Prime Minister between 1966 and 1977, and from 1980 until her tragic assassination in 1984, Gandhi worked tirelessly to emphasize national integration. Her political career was defined by her unwavering commitment to unity and integrity.
One of the landmark achievements made by her was decisive leadership during the war between India and Pakistan in 1971, which gave Bangladesh birth. Her activities indeed cemented her repute for a vision and determination docketed under a very formidable leader.
Throughout her political life, she emphasised the importance of bringing people from diverse regions, cultures, and backgrounds together under a unified national identity. Her leadership and policies consistently aimed at fostering unity and advancing the nation’s development.
National Integration Day continues to stand as a testament to Indira Gandhi’s enduring legacy and her efforts to unite the country in the face of numerous challenges.
