BJP leads in Manipur; Congress, others far behind
As counting of votes for Manipur's Assembly polls in underway, the state's ruling BJP is leading on nine seats, while the Congress is ahead in four and Janata Dal (United) in three, according to election officials. According to the Election Commission's initial trends, the Republican Party of India (Athawale), Naga People's Front, National People's Party, Kuki People's Alliance and independent candidates were leading one seat each.

Prominent faces who were trailing in the first two hours of counting of ballots included five-time former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal from his bastion Lambi; Congress chief ministerial candidate and incumbent Charanjit Singh Channi on both seats -- Chamkaur Sahib, a reserved seat that he has won three consecutive times, and Bhadaur in Barnala district; and Congress state unit chief Navjot Sidhu from Amritsar (East), the seat that came into being after 2012 delimitation and has backed Sidhu and his namesake wife -- Navjot Kaur.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is leading from Chamkaur Sahib seat in early trends of counting that began at 8 a.m. on Thursday. However, he is trailing from another seat, Bhadaur. The counting of votes for the 117-Assembly constituencies of Punjab is underway. The AAP has established a clear lead, leaving Congress in the second position in the poll race in early trends.
Harish Rawat leading in Lal Kuan seat in Uttarakhand
As per early counting trends, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat is leading with a slight margin in the Lal Kuan constituency as the Congress and BJP are running neck to neck in the 70-member Assembly. Rawat is a top contender for the Chief Minister's post if Congress gains a majority. Even as the exact numbers were awaited, sources said that Rawat was in the leading position.

Routing Congress, BJP sweeps municipal body polls in Assam
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has swept the civic bodies polls in Assam securing a majority in 75 municipal boards while its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) wrested two, election officials said on Wednesday. The main opposition Congress managed to secure only Narayanpur Municipal board in Lakhimpur district, and independents bagged two boards -- Mariani Municipal Board and Hailakandi Municipal Board.
Counting of votes kick-off in UP amid high security
The state's Chief Electoral Officer Ajay Kumar Shukla said that 84 counting centres had been set up across Uttar Pradesh. "There will be uninterrupted videography right from opening of strong rooms and taking EVMs to counting tables to the counting of votes," Shukla said, adding said that postal ballots will be counted first and then EVM ballots from 8.30 a.m.
