Opposition Leader in Bengal Urges Governor to Extend CAPF Deployment Through Durga Puja

The opposition leader in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, called on Governor C.V. Ananda Bose to urge that the deployment of 400 companies of central armed police forces here be continued up to Durga Puja in October. The appeal comes amid growing incidents of post-poll violence in different parts of the State since the counting for the Lok Sabha polls ended on June 4.

Accompanied by a group of post-poll violence victims, Adhikari met the Governor at Raj Bhavan to discuss the situation. The Governor assured Adhikari that he would take necessary steps to curb such incidents in the state.

"I pledge, in the names of all outstanding characters born in West Bengal, to take all stringent actions in this behalf," Governor Bose said while addressing the media later. He referenced a recent Calcutta High Court order, noting concerns akin to being under house arrest.

“Those who are victims of post-poll violence were not earlier allowed to meet the Governor,” he said.Governor Bose remarked, revealing having received 1,025 complaints related to such violence.

Adhikari informed reporters that he had highlighted to the Governor the erosion of democratic principles in West Bengal, alleging, “The ration cards of around 5,000 individuals in the state have been snatched away,” he alleged.
