Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar addressed Operation Sindoor on Tuesday, stating that Indians have adopted nationalism like never before.
"For national security, we need indigenous strength. War is best avoided when you are strong. Peace is kept by being always prepared for war… strength comes not just from technological prowess and traditional weapons but from the people as well," the Vice President stated.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Rajya Sabha Internship Programme Phase 7 at the Vice-President's Enclave, Dhankhar noted, "The recent Operation Sindoor has drastically changed our thinking. Our nationalism today stands at an unprecedented level. This can be seen in the manner all political parties have taken part in delegations outside the country, as a reflection of our total condemnation of terrorism. Post-recent events, we have no option but to join hands and become stronger.". Like institutions, political factions have a moral responsibility to the national cause. Ultimately, all institutions—the Legislature, Judiciary, Executive—focus on national growth, welfare, transparency, accountability, and honesty.”
He implored political parties to put national interests before partisan agendas, particularly when it comes to security and economic advancement. "I appeal to all across the political divide to seriously consider and arrive at a consensus regarding national security, growth, and internal safety. Politics can at times get too heated for nationalism and security, something we need to overcome," he further stated.
Dhankhar also emphasized the absolute position of Parliament in governance, with the following words: "The Indian Parliament is far greater than an ordinary legislature. It is the expression of the will of 1.4 billion citizens and the sole constitutionally authorized forum truly expressing public opinion. Therefore, Parliament is paramount.". Not in all things—executives rule, and the judges dispense justice—but Parliament's superiority is in two specific areas: it is the final law-making authority and accountability of the executive. There are fundamentals that governance is based on: openness, accountability, and, in today's times, best institutional performance to drive progress at a rapid pace. Parliament is the final platform for discussion, conversation, debate, and dialogue."
