'No Muslim woman wants her husband to have three wives.' : Assam CM Himanta Sarma strongly supports Uniform Civil Code

Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that no Muslim woman wants her husband to have three wives, adding all those whom he has met wanted UCC to get implemented. He pointed out that Muslim man marrying more than one woman was not his problem, instead its the problem of the Muslim mothers and sisters. Apart from Himanta, many other chief ministers of BJP ruled states have already shown their interest in implementing the UCC in their respective states.  

Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma has come out openly in support of  the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He has said that no Muslim woman wants her husband to have three wives, adding all those whom he has met wanted UCC to get implemented. He pointed out that Muslim man marrying more than one woman was not his problem, instead its the problem of the Muslim mothers and sisters. Apart from Himanta, many other chief ministers of BJP ruled states have already shown their interest in implementing the UCC in their respective states.

2. Biswa Sarma said that, its not him who has any problem with Muslim man marrying more than one woman but its a problem of the Muslim mothers and sisters. To honour the Muslim women and mothers in the society, after the Triple Talaq law, the UCC should get implemented.

3. Sarma also said that, since he is a Hindu, he has the UCC for his sister and daughter. And if his daughter has the UCC then Muslim daughters must have that Protection too.

4. With serious intentions to implement the UCC in Uttar Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on April 23, said  "One law for all in one country is the need of the hour. It is required that we should get out of the system of one law for one person and another for others. We are in favour of a common civil code."

5. Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami, on March 24 said that his government would prepare the draft of a UCC to be implemented in the state. He added that the state Cabinet has unanimously approved the proposal. Similarly on April 25, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur said that his government is ready to implement the UCC in Himachal. However the state government will examine the UCC before taking a final decision.

6. However, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on April 26 called the attempt by some state to introduce the UCC as "an unconstitutional and anti-minorities move". In this matter, the board has also written a letter to the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.
