Narendra Modi Overtakes Indira Gandhi to Become India’s Second Longest-Serving Prime Minister

The feat puts him above the late Indira Gandhi, who was in office as Prime Minister for 4,077 consecutive days from January 24, 1966, until March 24, 1977.

On 25 July, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi achieved a milestone in Indian political history as he completed 4,078 continuous days in office. The feat puts him above the late Indira Gandhi, who was in office as Prime Minister for 4,077 consecutive days from January 24, 1966, until March 24, 1977.

With this achievement, Modi is now the second-longest serving Prime Minister in a single term, behind only India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Apart from achieving this milestone, PM Modi has several rare distinctions in Indian politics. He is the first Prime Minister born after India's independence, and he is the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister. In addition, he is also the longest-serving Prime Minister from a non-Hindi-speaking area.

Another major achievement is his being the first to lead the BJP to two successive full-majority victories in the Lok Sabha elections and hence the only non-Congress leader to have done so. He is also the first Prime Minister after Indira Gandhi in 1971 to come back to power with a full majority while serving as Prime Minister.

Furthermore, PM Modi has a unique political achievement in common with Nehru, in that he is the sole other leader who has led his party to three consecutive general election wins nationally.

Continuing his winning run even longer, Modi has now achieved six consecutive electoral successes as the leader of a government—three as Chief Minister of Gujarat (in 2002, 2007, and 2012), and three as Prime Minister after the general elections of 2014, 2019, and 2024. This highlights his close to 24-year-long tenure as an elected leader both at the national and state level.

While Nehru's record for the longest uninterrupted service as Prime Minister remains unmatched, Modi has matched him in one other sense in that he has led a political party to three successive national election wins.

Born in the tiny town of Vadnagar in Gujarat, Narendra Modi's early days were spent helping his father sell tea at a railway station. His rise to politics started from the ranks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and then the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Known far and wide for his grassroot connectivity and impassioned communication, Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat for more than a decade. His success at the state level ultimately propelled him to the national forefront, where he led the BJP to a landslide victory in the 2014 general elections. Ever since, he has been instrumental in forging India's global identity, making the nation a proud and powerful voice in international affairs.
