MDMK Urges Return of Katchatheevu Island, Elevates it as Key Election Agenda

Highlighting the party's manifesto titled 'Sloganeering for 24 Rights', Vaiko reiterated their commitment to pursuing the retrieval of Katchatheevu. This issue gained renewed attention following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent accusation against former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for ceding the island to Sri Lanka in 1974. Modi criticized both the DMK and the Congress for their handling of the matter, accusing them of neglecting Tamil Nadu's interests.

Vaiko, the founder of MDMK and leader of the INDIA bloc, has emphasized the party's stance on reclaiming the Katchatheevu island from Sri Lanka. Speaking to the media in Tiruchi on Sunday, the veteran leader expressed his fervent desire for the island to be returned to Tamil Nadu.

MDMK, an ally of the Congress within the INDIA bloc, has consistently accused the Congress of betraying Tamil Nadu's interests.

In their manifesto unveiled on Saturday, Vaiko outlined MDMK's opposition to the Koodankulam nuclear power plant and advocated for the scrapping of the New Education Policy. Furthermore, he expressed the party's commitment to seeking constitutional amendments to grant more autonomy to states. Vaiko also advocated for the repeal of Article 361, which grants extensive powers to Governors.

Vaiko asserted that if his alliance were to assume power at the national level, they would actively work towards repealing the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Additionally, MDMK advocated for the removal of all toll plazas and proposed the introduction of Thirukkural, a classical Tamil text, across the country.
