Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati on Saturday emphasized the party's philosophy of action and not mere words, claiming that the people of Uttar Pradesh have seen how the BSP, with her at its helm, thinks in terms of results.
Saluting BSP founder Kanshi Ram on his 91st birth anniversary, Mayawati said, "On this special day, BSP members from all over the country have saluted Kanshi Ram Ji and reaffirmed commitment to fortify his social transformation and economic empowerment movement."
Highlighting the value of voting power, she further said, "For liberating the 'Bahujan Samaj' from abject poverty, unemployment, exploitation, backwardness, caste-based discrimination, and communal violence, people have to understand the worth of their vote. Achieving the master key to political power is the need of the hour—this is the message today."
Addressing herself as "iron lady," Mayawati said, "The people of Uttar Pradesh have witnessed how the BSP, led by the 'iron lady,' has fulfilled its commitments through tangible action. In power, the BSP provided all-around development for Bahujans, while other parties made mere self-serving promises."
Kanshi Ram, who was born on March 15, 1934, in Punjab's Rupnagar district, devoted his life to empowering the marginalized sections of society and making them politically powerful. In 1971, he formed the All India Backwards and Minorities Communities Employees Federation (BAMCEF), and then the Dalit Shoshit Samaj Sangharsh Samiti in 1981, before forming the BSP in 1984.
He was a Member of Parliament for Etawah (Uttar Pradesh) in 1991 and Hoshiarpur (Punjab) in 1996, and also held a seat in the Rajya Sabha from 1998 to 2004. Kanshi Ram died on October 9, 2006, in Delhi at the age of 71.
