On Saturday, while India commemorated the 25th anniversary of its victory in the 1999 Kargil war, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a poignant tribute to the valiant soldiers who laid down their lives defending the country.
The day, which is observed as Kargil Vijay Diwas, marks India's successful battle against Pakistani troops who had occupied key mountain heights in the Kargil area of Ladakh.
With the help of social media site X, the Prime Minister sent his greetings and a warm message:
"Heartfelt greetings to the fellow countrymen on Kargil Vijay Diwas. This day reminds us of the unmatched bravery and heroism of those courageous sons of Mother India who gave their lives to guard the pride of the country. Their zeal to give everything for the motherland will inspire every generation. Jai Hind!"
Commemorated every year on July 26, Kargil Vijay Diwas marks the victory of Operation Vijay, an Indian Armed Forces mission to recapture seized peaks and re-establish territorial sovereignty.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also posted a tribute on social media to the martyred heroes. In his post, he said:
"Kargil Vijay Diwas is a remembrance day of pride and the tale of triumph for the brave soldiers of our country. During the year 1999, our soldiers, in 'Operation Vijay,' made the adversary kneel down, leaving behind a lasting example of unconquerable bravery and valour."
He went on to add,
"Today, I pay my respects to all the courageous heroes who gave their last breath for the motherland's defence. The country will always owe its debt to your sacrifice and commitment."
The nation was joined by Union Minister J.P. Nadda in paying homage. He wrote in his X post:
“This victory not only reclaimed the mountain peaks but also restored India’s pride and honour. Our brave soldiers sacrificed their lives to hoist the Tricolour again in Kargil, filling every Indian with pride.”
He added, “This grateful nation will forever remain indebted to our heroic soldiers who, with their extraordinary bravery, protected the self-respect of Mother India.”
To pay tribute to the brave soldiers, commemoration events are being organized across the country. Ceremonies at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass and different military schools across the country will honor those who fought bravely for the country.
