Jairam Ramesh Clarifies Pahalgam Attack Remarks as Personal Views, Not Party Stance

He explained that only the Congress Working Committee (CWC) resolution and the statements of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi form the party's official line.

Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh on Monday clarified that the opinions of some Congress leaders on the recent terror attack in Pahalgam do not form the party's official line.

He explained that only the Congress Working Committee (CWC) resolution and the statements of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi form the party's official line.

Ramesh approached X (former Twitter) to assert, "What individual Congress leaders are saying is their personal view. The view of the Congress party is given in the CWC resolution and the views expressed by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and LoP Rahul Gandhi." He also said that some Congress leaders, especially those who were holding important posts earlier, had issued comments not according to the party line.

Alluding to the gravity of the moment, Ramesh acknowledged security failures and intelligence failures but appealed to unity and cooperation, laying importance on the necessity of constant exchange of communications between the Government and the Opposition. He requested the leaders of his party not to make independent announcements, saying, "There is no need for other leaders to speak now."

He also informed that the CWC had met on April 24 and passed a resolution condemning the senseless attack, which was launched against tourists in Pahalgam. The CWC condemned the intelligence failure and stressed that Hindus had been targeted deliberately with the intention of generating communal tensions. The CWC blamed Pakistan for the attack as well.

Ramesh reiterated that, at this sensitive time, only the CWC's decision and words of Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and AICC office-bearers of record need to be considered as the party's official position.
