Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has strongly defended his brother-in-law, businessman Robert Vadra, after a chargesheet was filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case relating to a Gurugram land deal. In an X post, Gandhi condemned the action as part of an enduring political witch-hunt.
For the last 10 years, this government has attacked my brother-in-law relentlessly. This new chargesheet is only another installment of that continuing witch hunt," he posted.
Showing support for his family, Gandhi further wrote, "I stand with Robert, Priyanka, and their children as they weather yet another bout of politically motivated defamation and harassment.
“I have complete faith in their courage to withstand these attacks with dignity. The truth will emerge victorious in the end,” he asserted.
Gandhi’s remarks followed the Congress party’s own defense of Vadra. Party General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala addressed the media, insisting there was "not an iota of illegality" in the Gurugram land deal. “When did buying and selling land become a crime?” he questioned.
The chargesheet was filed by the Enforcement Directorate on Thursday, identifying Vadra and his company, Sky Light Hospitality Pvt Ltd. The case involves the acquisition of 3.53 acres of land in Sector 83 of Gurugram in February 2008, which the agency claims was completed using fake documents.
The ED also alleges that Vadra used his clout to get a commercial license for the property. Earlier, on July 16, the agency had attached 43 properties aggregating to about ₹37.64 crore, belonging to Vadra, Sky Light Hospitality, and others covered in the case.
In reaction to the developments, Vadra's office released a terse but stinging statement, calling the chargesheet "an extension of the continuing political witch hunt" against him by the ruling government. In spite of this, the statement asserted that Vadra would continue to cooperate with the investigating authorities in every way, as he has done till now.
"He is confident that the truth will prevail and that he will be cleared of all charges," the statement said, and he is eagerly awaiting defending himself in court and restoring his reputation.
