The Election Commission (EC) of India on Thursday, announced the schedule for Gujarat Assembly elections. According to the schedule, voting for 182 member Gujarat assembly will take place in two phases on December 1 and December 5, 2022. The results will be announced on December 8, 2022. In the first phase,i.e. December 1, 89 seats will go to polls. On December 5, polls for the remaining 93 seats will be held. According to the EC, over 4.9 crore total electors will cast their vote, on over 51,000 polling stations.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won six consecutive assembly polls in Gujarat. The state has witnessed direct contest between the BJP and the Congress since 1995. However, Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is trying hard to make the contest three-cornered this time.
In 2017 elections, the BJP won with a simple majority with an increase in its vote share despite decrease in the number of seats. Talking about the results, BJP won 99 seats, Congress won 77, 1 seat was won by NCP while Bhartiya Tribal Party and Independent candidate won 2 and 3 seats respectively.
The 2017 elections in Gujarat took place on December 9 and December 14 while the counting took place on December 18. The term of the present Gujarat Assembly will end on February 18, 2023.
