In what appeared to be a direct attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, Assam BJP MP Dilip Saikia on Monday alleged that Gogoi’s wife had long-standing links with Pakistan and that Pakistani media had used Gogoi’s recent Parliament speech to criticise the Indian government.
Taking part in the current Lok Sabha discussion on 'Operation Sindoor,' Saikia asserted, "The wife of Gaurav Gogoi was on Pakistan's payroll for several years, and the Congress leader proceeded to travel to Pakistan at least 19 times."
He also said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) established by the Assam government is probing into suspected links between Gogoi and Pakistan. "The SIT has made shocking revelations, and the report will be tabled soon," Saikia added.
Saikia also pointed to Pakistani media coverage, asserting that “many Pakistani media outlets used the speech of Gaurav Gogoi on Operation Sindoor to attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government.” He added, “Look at the reports in Pakistan media today where they have mentioned Gaurav Gogoi’s speech several times to attack us.”
The controversy took a further escalation on Tuesday when Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma joined the attack with cutting comments targeting Gogoi. Taking to X (previously Twitter), Sarma posted, "The speech given by our Jorhat MP in Parliament yesterday established beyond doubt that he is acting on behalf of Pakistan."
The Chief Minister proceeded to accuse Gogoi of having "close relationships with the Pakistani establishment," even citing an alleged "secret trip" in support of his allegations.
Sarma challenged the Congress MP's patriotism, saying, "With his wife and both children being citizens of a foreign land, he can quit India anytime." He also called Gogoi "a shame for Assam" and accused him of trampling "our pride as proud Indians."
This war of words follows a rise in political temperatures on the Centre's response to 'Operation Sindoor' and the wider debate over national security.
In an earlier statement, CM Sarma leveled a series of serious allegations, stating that the wife of Gogoi had been gathering sensitive government-related information for "international climate lobbies." Stating that documents prove these allegations, he did not reveal them. "We have documents to establish that his wife was gathering intelligence outputs of the Government of India. This operation is directly connected," he said.
The Chief Minister further vowed to bring major disclosures on September 10. "What I will disclose on September 10 will make Rahul Gandhi rue why he has appointed such an individual to a leadership position," he stated, alluding to Gogoi's status as Congress president in Assam.
"There are very serious national security implications. We will take action on September 10," he further emphasized, hinting at more political shocks to come.
