During a significant event on Friday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge unveiled the party's 'Paanch Nyay' manifesto for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The manifesto outlines the party's commitment to conducting a comprehensive caste census across the nation to accurately gauge the socio-economic status of different castes and sub-castes.
Furthermore, the manifesto emphasizes the party's dedication to uplifting the weaker sections of society through its 'Paanch Nyay and Twenty-Five Guarantee' agenda.
The release of the manifesto was attended by prominent leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, as well as other key figures such as P. Chidambaram and K. C. Venugopal.
In addition to presenting their manifesto, the Congress party drew a comparison between the economic performances of the UPA and NDA governments, asserting that the former had outperformed the latter.
P. Chidambaram, former Finance Minister in the UPA government, criticized the current government for what he deemed as a slowdown in economic growth compared to the UPA era. He highlighted statistics indicating higher growth rates during the UPA regime, contrasting them with the figures under the BJP-led government.
Chidambaram voiced concerns about the erosion of democratic institutions and the denial of rights to weaker sections of society under the current administration, stating that these were warnings previously issued by the Congress party that have now become realities.
In reflection, he emphasized the need to safeguard democracy from the encroachment of autocracy, a trajectory he believes the country is currently on, echoing sentiments expressed by global observers.
