Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced on Saturday the appointment of Congress MLA Charan Das Mahant as the CLP (Congress Legislature Party) Leader of Chhattisgarh, effective immediately. The decision was approved by Congress President Kharge, according to Congress General Secretary (organisation) K.C Venugopal.
In addition to Mahant's appointment, Kharge also approved the continuation of Deepak Baij as the President of Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee.
This leadership reshuffle comes in the aftermath of the Congress party's loss to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the recently concluded assembly elections in Chhattisgarh. The Congress secured only 35 out of 90 seats, while the BJP emerged victorious with 54 seats. Despite the setback, the Congress is realigning its leadership in the hope of regaining strength in the state. The party had aimed for a second consecutive term but fell short in the electoral competition.
