Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday asserted that the biggest danger to Hindus is not posed by other religious communities but by within their own community—namely, the Left and liberal elements.
In an award function ceremony organized by a private body, Sarma averred, "I strongly feel that the liberals and the Left are the greatest threat to Hindus." He did not say Muslims or Christians posed any threat to Hindu society but internal fissures and ideological onslaughts were destabilizing it.
He referred to West Bengal as an example, saying that the erosion of Hindu dominance in the state was a legacy inherited by the Left and liberal forces by Mamata Banerjee's rule.
Sarma dwelt on the age-old traditions of Indian civilization and reminded everyone that it precedes the country's independence in 1947 and goes way beyond 5,000 years back. To his view, India is by its nature secular and does not require any external schooling on harmony and tolerance.
In a video uploaded on his X handle, Sarma spoke directly to political leaders, stating, "If Rahul Gandhi or Mamata Banerjee think that Hindus will become extinct, they should understand that Hindus will always survive."
Referring to demographic changes, he asserted that the Hindu population in Assam has fallen to 58%, and in West Bengal, it is around 65%. But he was sure that Hindu civilization would keep flourishing.
Sarma also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, stating that India is making remarkable progress in various sectors. “The construction of the Ram Temple happened after 500 years… now the time has come for the existing Wakf law to be repealed,” he said.
Talking about legal reforms, Sarma brought in the ending of triple talaq as an important step and opined that the adoption of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is becoming more glaring.
Looking at India's post-independence history, he added that whereas Pakistan proclaimed itself to be an Islamic republic, India continued to be secular because of its ancient civilizational tradition. "Many civilizations have risen and fallen, but the Hindu civilization has stood the test of time," he stated.
Posting a sneak peek of the event on social media, Sarma tweeted, "I am in Kolkata at the Vivekananda Sewa Samman 2025, an effort that celebrates the principles and doctrines of Swami Ji."
