21-year-old German singer-songwriter Cassandra Mae Spittmann, renowned for her heartfelt performances of Indian devotional melodies, captivated an esteemed audience on Tuesday, none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself. Mae, previously acknowledged and commended by PM Modi during the 105th episode of his 'Mann Ki Baat' program, paid a visit to the Prime Minister alongside her mother in Palladam, a town nestled in Tamil Nadu's Tirupur district.
With her soul-stirring voice, Mae serenaded PM Modi with the enchanting bhajan 'Achyutam Keshavam,' an ode to Lord Krishna. The lyrics of the bhajan exalt the eternal and divine qualities of Lord Krishna, portraying him as the slayer of the demon Keshi and adorned with resplendent locks of hair.
PM Modi, deeply engrossed in Mae's performance, enthusiastically joined in by tapping beats on the table, showering her with cheers and applause as she concluded her rendition.
Mae, proficient in multiple languages including Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Urdu, Assamese, Bengali, Sanskrit, and Kannada, has also lent her voice to the devotional hymn 'Ram Aayenge' (Ram will come) prior to the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony in Ayodhya earlier this year.
PM Modi expressed his joy over Mae's rendition, sharing her bhajan on social media platform X, recalling his previous mention of her during 'Mann Ki Baat.' He had earlier showcased Mae's rendition of 'Vaishnava Jana To' on Gandhi Jayanti.
Introducing Mae during 'Mann Ki Baat,' PM Modi highlighted her talent as a captivating force for every Indian, emphasizing the global resonance of Indian culture and music. He shared snippets of Mae's performances, including 'Jagat Jaana Palam,' a hymn in praise of Lord Vishnu, and a Kannada composition.
Mae's journey into the realm of Indian music began around five years ago, inspired by her initial exposure to African drumming at the tender age of three.
PM Modi's encounter with Mae coincides with his two-day visit to Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, dedicated to inaugurating and laying the foundation for various developmental initiatives.
