The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday, alleging Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress party, of making baseless and harmful accusations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP contended that Gandhi's remarks during a public rally in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, violated the Model Code of Conduct.
Referring to a prior notice issued to Gandhi on November 23, 2023, regarding his disparaging comments against Prime Minister Modi, the BJP accused him of persistently making false and malicious allegations. According to the BJP, Gandhi's recent statements at the Coimbatore rally on April 12 exacerbated the situation.
The complaint emphasized Gandhi's attempt to sow discord by insinuating that Prime Minister Modi harbors animosity towards the Tamil language. By alleging that the Prime Minister advocates for only one language in India, Gandhi purportedly aimed to drive a wedge between Tamil-speaking communities and others, tarnishing Modi's reputation in the process.
The BJP submitted a transcript of Gandhi's speech as evidence, highlighting his unsubstantiated claims and divisive rhetoric. They argued that Gandhi's actions were aimed at garnering electoral advantage by exploiting linguistic and cultural differences, thereby undermining national unity.
Contrary to Gandhi's assertions, the BJP asserted that Prime Minister Modi has consistently demonstrated respect for Tamil language and culture. They cited instances where Modi expressed his commitment to promoting Tamil as an international language, a sentiment that resonates deeply with Tamil-speaking communities, fostering a sense of pride in their heritage and linguistic identity.
