A day after the government's decision to confer the Bharat Ratna on Karpoori Thakur, a prominent political figure, the battle for his legacy intensified. The BJP praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for embodying Thakur's ideals, while opposition leaders showcased their adherence to his agenda and reiterated the call for a caste census.
On Thakur's centenary, Modi and other BJP leaders paid tributes, emphasizing his influence on the government's pro-poor programs. The BJP accused the opposition of neglecting Thakur's contributions when in power. In response, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD's Lalu Prasad highlighted Thakur's impact on their politics and demanded Bharat Ratna for him.
The Congress welcomed the honor but stressed the need for a caste census. Rahul Gandhi asserted that a true tribute to Thakur involves "real justice" rather than "politics of symbolism."
Kumar, aligning himself with Thakur's legacy, taunted Modi for not informing him about the Bharat Ratna decision. Modi, in a tribute, praised Thakur's rise from extreme poverty to Bihar's chief minister, citing his dedication to social justice.
The BJP associated its agenda with Thakur's ideals, asserting that Modi's decision honored the poor and youth working for society. The BJP highlighted its pro-poor initiatives, aligning them with Thakur's agenda.
Amid political maneuvers, Thakur's legacy becomes a focal point in Bihar's political landscape, with the BJP aiming to make inroads among non-dominant backward castes, especially the Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs), a decisive group in the state. The upcoming elections are expected to witness a keen contest for the support of these communities.
