Congress' revival journey: It's all about making the right beginning
Lal Thanhawla holds the record for being the longest-serving Chief Minister of Mizoram, occupying the position for five terms -- 1984 to 1986, 1989 to 1993, 1993 to 1998, 2008 to 2013, and 2013 to 2018. In 1986, he stepped aside facilitating the takeover by former rebel leader Laldenga of Mizo National Front (MNF) as part of the famous Mizoram Accord inked by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Well, there is no permanence in politics. Even Capt Amarinder Singh has been a friend of the Rajiv-Sonia parivar, but that did not prevent his ouster.
Biden, Modi or who? Wanted a world leader at UNGA this week (Opinion)
As the United Nations convenes its annual General Assembly in New York City this week, a galaxy of world leaders is arriving to address the world's most important podium, and audiences. They will step up to the podium to share their 2 cents, in their 2 minutes of speech time (ok, may be 7-8 minutes), to give solutions to the challenges and opportunities in the present and future of humankind, and co-existence on, and with planet Earth.
Rural India, a bright spot which cannot light up the whole economy
In the last one year, agri contribution to GDP has been healthy but some higher frequency indicators, particularly for rural, have been more mixed. Covid infections have also been higher in rural areas during the second (vs the first) wave. With optimism about the rural economy continuing, we assess the state of both the agri and non-agri parts. Expecting the rural economy alone to do the heavy lifting could be a tall order.
Can China draw Taliban-ruled Af into its economic orbit?
"China is more cautious than you might think," former acting governor of the Da Afghanistan Bank -- the country's Central Bank, told American think tank-Atlantic Council a few days ago. China with its multi billion investments in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) needs a steady and stable political environment to invest.
UK-UAE bonhomie
They also base their criticism of US President Joe Bidens decision on the inputs by both the British and other countries intelligence that such an action might end up in chaos, and the subsequent events leading to the rout by the Taliban forces in Afghanistan, proved their point. In this scenario the UK is eagerly trying to find an ally in the Gulf region, which could guarantee its interests and contain any threat to it not just in the region but beyond in other Arab states too.
A week ahead to decide 'fate' of Peace and Guns in Nagaland
The Centre has moved Nagaland Governor R.N. Ravi to Tamil Nadu in the same gubernatorial position. Like Mishra, Ravi too is a former top ranking IB official and was handpicked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval to be peace interlocutor for Naga peace parleys since 2014. From the beginning, the NSCN(IM) has had an issue with Ravi.
RaGa's Kashmiri Pandit solidarity may be an assertion for electoral gain
He also posted a picture of a lighted earthen lamp with 'bow to the martyrdom of Kashmiri Pandits' written across. The day is observed by the Kashmiri Pandits (KP) as Martyr's Day in memory of Tikalal Taploo, a Hindu leader who was assassinated on this day in 1989 in Srinagar. Taploo was the state vice president of BJP and was associated with the RSS.
Friday, markets have shown their vulnerability, more likely to follow
Markets rose sharply on Friday and it appeared that we would hit the 60,000-mark on BSESENSEX quite soon but it wasn't so. Markets corrected quite sharply midway and failed to recover. Volumes were high and it appears that we are in for a short-term correction at the bare minimum. This is not to suggest in any manner that the current rally is over. BSESENSEX gained 710.82 points.
Congress leaning 'Left' to recruit young talent?
The Congress is buoyed by these young leaders after the exit of some people who were perceived to be close to former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, starting with Jyotiraditya Scindia and Jitin Prasada who joined the BJP. The latest is Sushmita Dev who joined the TMC and was women wing President of the party. She has now been nominated to the Upper House of Parliament.
After Punjab, will it be Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh?
In Rajasthan, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has been evading the high command's decision to adjust Sachin Pilot camp and in Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel rallied more than 50 MLAs to Delhi to show his strength. The Congress leadership is miffed with state of affairs in both the states with Chief Ministers defying Congress leadership decisions.
