Viral video Captures Brutal Assault on Couple Allegedly in Illicit Relationship in Bengal

Abominable footage of a ruthless assault on a couple, allegedly having illicit relations, has triggered outrage after its circulation, leading West Bengal Police to initiate legal action, said sources. The incident took place in Chopra, Uttar Dinajpur district, and the local TMC leader was seen meting out punishment in accordance with a kangaroo court decision, news agency PTI reported quoting its sources.

Contrary to baseless and false news being propagated about the incident, the Police District of Islampur attached an update saying that appropriate steps had already been taken with police security given to the victims. A suo motu case has been registered and inquiries are being conductedSuperintendent Joby Thomas K confirmed that the police are aware of the social media footage and how a case was registered subsequent to that.

The viral video showed the accused repeatedly beating the woman in front of a crowd; she was in visible pain. The incident has remained in controversy since allegations came up linking it to local political figures, with Amit Malviya from the BJP lashing out at the incident as it exemplified how lawlessness happened under Mamata Banerjee's regime.

CPI(M) and Congress leaders denounced the incident, demanding accountability and drawing attention to the public safety concerns of West Bengal. The TMC did condemn the assault of the duo but drew out the historical precedents of such vigilante justice during previous regimes.

Incidents have kicked off larger debates about governance and law enforcement in West Bengal, and appeals are now made for justice with stringent action to be put into effect against perpetrators of vigilante violence.
