Supreme Court denies bail to ex-IAF officer in spying case, terms him dangerous for country

The bench was headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde and comprising Justices A.S. Bopanna and V. Ramasubramanian. They declined to entertain a plea filed by Ranjith K.K. against a Delhi High Court order.

Declining to entertain a plea on Thursday, the Supreme Court termed a former IAF officer as dangerous for the country and denied him bail. The officer is facing trial under the Official Secrets Act (OSA).

The bench was headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde and comprising Justices A.S. Bopanna and V. Ramasubramanian. They declined to entertain a plea filed by Ranjith K.K. against a Delhi High Court order. The bench told him, "You are a danger to the entire nation. You remain where you are." The plea is linked with to IAF officer who is arrested for allegedly passing sensitive information to suspected Pakistan agents.

•    Ranjith is facing a trial for sharing sensitive information with suspected people who were linked with Pakistan's intelligence service.

•    Ranjith's lawyer informed the bench that his client (Ranjith) has not seen his mother in Kerala for five years, as he has been in jail under the OSA.

•    Earlier Ranjith had filed a petition in the high court to grant him bail, stating that he was a young man at the time of his arrest and the only charge framed against him was under a section that has maximum punishment for 14 years.

•   The high court had noted that as per the FIR and the order by which the charge was framed against him, Ranjith is accused of having passed on sensitive data to persons who were intending to threaten the sovereignty and integrity of the country.

•   The police had alleged that he was honey-trapped and afterward shared sensitive information with Pakistan's secret service.

•   While denying bail, the high court observed that various documents have been recovered that included WhatsApp chat history, map of the Air Force base, etc.
