Sole survivor of chopper crash, Group Captain Varun Singh currently being treated

Group Captain Varun Singh is the sole survivor of the ill-fated military helicopter crash that killed India's first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, his wife, and 11 others were killed on Wednesday. The Group Captain is currently being treated for severe burn injuries at the military hospital in Wellington. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has also ordered an inquiry into the crash.

Key Points:


1. In August, Group Captain Varun Singh had won the Shaurya Chakra for his courage in handling his aircraft after it was hit by major technical issues during a sortie last year. The braveheart had managed to safely land his Tejas fighter despite facing a mid-air emergency.

2. The Group Captain was on the chopper to receive General Rawat who was headed to address the faculty and students at the  Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.

3. Group Captain Singh is from eastern Uttar Pradesh's Deoria village and his father is also a retired Army colonel. Furthermore, State Congress leader Akhilesh Pratap Singh is his uncle. His uncle Dinesh Pratap Singh has told the media that he is currently in hospital and more information about his condition will be known only when the Indian Air Force issues a bulletin.
