Following the enactment of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2019, increased security measures have been implemented across various districts of the capital city, with a focus on intensive night patrols and flag marches carried out by paramilitary forces in key areas such as northeast Delhi, Shaheen Bagh, Jamia Nagar, and other sensitive localities.
According to police officials, a total of 43 hotspots have been identified in northeast Delhi, including Seelampur, Jaffrabad, Mustafabad, Bhajanpura, Khajoori Khas, and Seemapuri.
"We have conducted flag marches over the past two days and intend to deploy additional forces for further marches. Furthermore, a comprehensive list of individuals involved in criminal activities and causing disturbances has been compiled, and they are currently under police surveillance," stated Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Joy Tirkey.
"We are confident in maintaining peaceful conditions, and we are closely monitoring social media platforms for any potential threats. Appropriate action will be taken as necessary," Tirkey emphasized.
In the Shaheen Bagh area of southeast Delhi, where a protest initially sparked on December 15, 2019, in response to the passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act on December 11, 2019, significant police presence has been observed.
The protest at Shaheen Bagh, which lasted until March 24, 2020, was predominantly led by women who blocked a major road in the area.
Simultaneously, as the demonstrations at Shaheen Bagh unfolded, including participation from students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) against the CAA, Delhi witnessed one of its most severe communal riots in February 2020, spanning across 11 police stations in the northeast District.
The unrest, primarily concentrated in northeast Delhi, resulted in the tragic loss of 53 lives and left over 500 individuals injured.
