Pralay: India's new SRBM can hit high-altitude enemy targets, dodge air defence systems

The Pralay missile has a  range of 150-500 Km. It weighs around 5 tonne and with a payload of 1000 kilogram, it  can travel up to a distance of 350 km. The new tactical SRBM can hit enemy targets at high-altitude locations and it will boost the firepower of Indian Army in the mountainous areas of Ladakh along LAC with China where the Indian troops are facing repeated incursions and consistent military buid-up by the PLA.

India on Wednesday successfully test-fired the indigenously developed new short range, surface-to-surface guided ballistic missile (SRBM) 'Pralay' off the Odisha coast in Balasore. Pralay is also a 'game-changer'  for the Indian forces as it can dodge enemy's air defence sysyems by changing its trajectory mid-air.

Key Points |

1. Pralay missile was launched from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, on Wednesday. The solid-fuel missile is based on the Prithvi Defence Vehicle from the Indian ballistic missile programme and is developed by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO).

2. The missile has a range of 350-500 KM, a payload of 1000 kilogram and it weighs around 5 tonnes. It can be launched from a mobile launcher, at a short notice. The missile uses an inertial navigation system.

4. The Pralay missile is no less than China's Dongfeng 12 and Russia’s 9K720 Iskander, which are also short-range tactical ballistic missiles.

5. "Indigenously developed new surface-to-surface conventional ballistic missile ‘Pralay’ successfully flight tested from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island today," DRDO in it's tweet informed the nation, about the missile launch.
