'Not against govt policy or scheme': SC on plea against freebie promises by parties
A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana said the court's intention was to initiate a wider public debate on the issue of freebies and it was suggested that an expert panel should be formed to examine the issue. The bench, also comprising Justices Hima Kohli and C.T. Ravikumar, said: "We are not against any government policy. We are not against any scheme..."
IAF sacks three officers for misfiring of BrahMos missile into Pakistan
The IAF in a statement said, "BrahMos missile was accidentally fired on 09 March 2022. A Court of Inquiry (CoI), set up to establish the facts of the case, including fixing responsibility for the incident, found that deviation from the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) by three officers led to the accidental firing of the missile."
DRDO, Navy successfully flight-test vertical launch short range surface-to-air missile
The flight test was carried out from an Indian Naval Ship against a high-speed unmanned aerial target for demonstration of vertical launch capability. The missiles, equipped with indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker, intercepted the target with high accuracy, the defence ministry said in a statement. The VL-SRSAM system has been indigenously designed and developed by DRDO.

He is expected to take up the assignment shortly. Doraiswami joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1992. Prior to joining the government, he worked for one year as a journalist. He has a Masters' Degree in history from the University of Delhi. After his in-service training in New Delhi from 1992-1993, Doraiswami was posted to the High Commission of India in Hong Kong in May 1994 as Third Secretary.

India reports 8,586 new Covid cases in 24 hours
The new cases were a slight decline from Monday's count of 9,531. With 48 people succumbing to the disease, the nationwide Covid death toll has risen to 5,27,416. The active caseload has come down to 96,506 cases, accounting for 0.22 per cent of the country's total positive cases.
Bomb hoax at five-star hotel rattles Mumbai cops again in 5 days
According to officials, on Monday, an anonymous phone call was received by the Hotel Lalit, near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, and the hotel authorities immediately alerted the Sahar Police Station. The caller reportedly warned that they had placed at least four bombs inside the hotel and demanded an extortion amount of Rs 5 crore to defuse them.
Infiltration bid foiled on LoC in J&K's Rajouri, two killed
The infiltration attempt was made Monday evening. Defence ministry spokesman, Lt. Colonel Devender Anand said, "The reconnaissance of the general area of attempted infiltration site is in progress. "In reconnaissance by Quadcopter, two bodies of infiltrators have been observed. Area is being scanned further."
Excise policy row: MHA suspends ex-commissioner, his deputy
The decision has been conveyed to the Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary (vigilance), whose inquiry report into the excise scam formed the basis of LG's recommendation for suspension. The suspension came two days after the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, V.K. Saxena, approved the initiation of disciplinary proceedings for 'serious lapses' against 11 officials of the excise department in connection with the excise policy 2021-22. Last Friday, the CBI had raided Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia's residence in connection with the alleged irregularities in Delhi's excise policy.
