President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday presented Padma Awards 2021 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan to 119 persons from various disciplines.
The 2021 list comprises 7 Padma Vibhushan, 10 Padma Bhushan, and 102 Padma Shri Awards, of which 29 awardees are women, 16 Posthumous awardees, and 1 transgender awardee.
The Padma Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. And the Padma Bhushan awards are given for distinguished service of a high order.

Among other prominent names who have been honoured with the prestigious civilian awards include singer Adnan Sami; Hindustani classical exponent Pandit Chhannulal Mishra; and Dr Raman Gangakhedkar, former Head Scientist, ICMR, who played a prominent role in India's fight against COVID-19, to name a few.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar were among those present at the function. Padma Awards of the last two years are being presented by President Kovind on Monday and Tuesday.
Other prominent names included Former External Affairs Minister late Sushma Swaraj, Olympian PV Sindhu and actor Kangana Ranaut. Swaraj was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan award posthumously. Her daughter Bansuri Swaraj received the award from President Ram Nath Kovind.

The awards are given as per the following criteria: Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of higher-order) and Padma Shri (distinguished service). The award seeks to recognize achievements in all fields of activities or disciplines where an element of public service is involved.
