The incident occurred as part of the ongoing repatriation efforts involving 276 Myanmar Army personnel who had sought refuge in Mizoram's Lawngtlai district on January 17. The soldiers had fled to Mizoram after their camps were captured by Arakan Army militants. On Monday, 184 of these soldiers were evacuated back to Myanmar on a military aircraft. The remaining 92 soldiers were scheduled to be airlifted on Tuesday. The Indian authorities completed all necessary formalities before the departure of the soldiers.

The soldiers, along with their arms and ammunition, had reached Bandukbanga village in Lawngtlai and were later taken to the Assam Rifles’ Parva camp. The influx of Myanmar soldiers seeking refuge in Mizoram since November 13, 2023, has now reached a total of 636 individuals.
