He expressed extreme worry over the increasing number of hit-and-run cases and underlined misuse of power and influence of the privileged in literally manipulating the legal system. "None of these injustices will be tolerated by my government," he assured. "These very people are very important to us, and I have told the State Police Department to put these cases as number one priority to ensure justice. Furthermore, we will be introducing tougher laws and severe penalties for those who cause the accidents and flee the scene."

Shinde's comments follow the arrest of Rajesh Shah, the deputy leader of his party, in the Worli hitandrun case. The Chief Minister's reaction came as the opposition launched an attack on the state government over the handling of these incidents. Some reports suggested that the vehicle that caused the accident was driven by Mihir Shah, son of Rajesh Shah. The police officials have taken Rajrishi Bidawat, driver for Rajesh Shah, into custody. Mihir Shah is still at large, with police issuing a lookout notice for his arrest.
