IIT-K Professor Succumbs to Cardiac Arrest During On-Stage Speech

The 53-year-old professor was immediately rushed to Laxmipat Singhania Institute of Cardiology, where he was declared dead upon arrival. According to sources at IIT-Kanpur, Professor Khandekar had been dealing with cardiac health issues since 2019.

In a tragic turn of events, Professor Sameer Khandekar, the Dean of Students Welfare and Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at IIT-Kanpur, passed away due to cardiac arrest while delivering a speech at an alumni meet on the campus. Ironically, his last words were a health-related advice, "Take care of your health...", before he collapsed on the dais.

Cardiologist Dr. Neeraj Kumar stated that by the time the professor reached the hospital, he had already passed away, attributing the cause of death to cardiac arrest or cardiac block.

Expressing deep sorrow, IIT-Kanpur Director Prof S. Ganesh shared the news and described the loss as that of "a humble soul." Professor Sameer Khandekar is survived by his parents, his wife Pradyanya, and a son. His body has been kept at the institute's health center, and the final rites will be conducted after his son, currently studying at Cambridge University in the UK, arrives. The IIT-Kanpur community mourns the untimely loss of a respected academic figure.
