Holi Celebrated at Sambhal's Kartikeya Mahadev Temple for the First Time in 46 Years

The celebration saw good turnout from various Hindu and social organizations at the temple, which was closed down in 1978 after communal violence. The temple was re-opened only in December last year.

For the first time in 46 years, believers visited the Kartikeya Mahadev Temple at Khaggu Sarai on Thursday to play Holi with great security in place.

The celebration saw good turnout from various Hindu and social organizations at the temple, which was closed down in 1978 after communal violence. The temple was re-opened only in December last year.

Deputy Director of Police and Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shreesh Chandra promised that widespread security arrangements were made to hold a peaceful festival.

"Holi is being observed peacefully at Kartikeya Mahadev Temple in Khaggu Sarai. No cause for concern. People are celebrating the festival in a secure environment," he said.

Located close to the Shahi Jama Masjid, the temple is in a sensitive area that has been at the center of tensions. Communal violence broke out in the region on November 24, 2024, after a protest against a court-ordered survey of the mosque, killing four individuals.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) district president Anand Agrawal was delighted with the historic celebration. "After 46 years, we have been fortunate enough to celebrate Holi at the Kartikeya Mahadev Temple. Individuals from various social organisations have gathered together, celebrating in flowers and colours," he added.

Worshippers also thanked security personnel for providing security. "Police have done a great job in keeping everything in order, and the environment is charged with happiness," commented participant Priyanshu Jain.

The temple, alternatively referred to as Bhasma Shankar Temple, was reopened last year on December 13. Officials rediscovered the years-old concealed building in an anti-encroachment drive and found an idol of Lord Hanuman sitting in front of a Shivling.
