Govt designates Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar a terrorist

The Union Home Ministry, in a recent notification, outlined Brar's involvement in multiple killings and his espousal of a radical ideology.

Canada-based gangster Satinderjit Singh, widely known as Goldy Brar, has been officially designated a terrorist by the Indian government under the anti-terror law UAPA. Alleged to be the mastermind behind the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, Brar, a key member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, is believed to have strong connections with a Pakistan-based agency.

The Union Home Ministry, in a recent notification, outlined Brar's involvement in multiple killings and his espousal of a radical ideology. Linked to the banned Babbar Khalsa International, he has a history of smuggling high-grade arms, ammunition, and explosive materials through drones from across the border. Brar is accused of supplying these materials for carrying out targeted killings and providing support to sharpshooters.

Originally from Sri Muktsar Sahib in Punjab, Brar currently resides in Brampton, Canada. His disruptive activities, including making threatening calls to pro-nationalist leaders, demanding ransom, and posting claims of killings on social media, have led the government to label him a terrorist. A Red Corner Notice issued by Interpol and a non-bailable warrant underscore the seriousness of the charges against him.

The central government, citing Brar's involvement in terrorism, has proposed adding him to the Fourth Schedule of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. This move aims to curb his alleged efforts to disrupt peace, communal harmony, and law and order in Punjab through activities such as sabotage, establishing terror modules, and carrying out anti-national acts.
The amendment to the Fourth Schedule, as per the notification, specifically includes Brar as serial number 56: 'Satwinder Singh alias Satinderjit Singh alias Goldy Brar.' The government's stance is based on the belief that Brar's actions pose a significant threat to national security.

"Now, therefore, in the exercise of the powers conferred by clause (a) of sub-section (1) of section 35 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, the central government hereby makes the following amendment in the Fourth Schedule to the said Act, namely:- "In the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, in the Fourth Schedule, after serial number 55 and entries relating thereto, the following serial number and entries shall be inserted, namely:- '56. Satwinder Singh alias Satinderjit Singh alias Goldy Brar'," the notification said.

Brar, who also claimed responsibility for the murder of Sidhu Moosewala in Punjab on May 29, 2022, continues to be a subject of international concern, with efforts being made to bring him to justice.
