Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar vacated the Vice President's Enclave on Monday, over a month and a half after his resignation, and shifted to an INLD president Abhay Singh Chautala-owned estate in Chhatarpur temporarily.
"Dhankhar left the VP estate at 4.15 PM. He met the staff and the officers and thanked them for their service before going away" said an official to HT. Another official informed that the Chhatarpur estate would be his temporary home until the government assigns him a bungalow in Delhi.
"The bungalow is being prepared. It might take another 15 days to a month for the bungalow to be ready," said the second official.
Dhankhar was the first vice president to occupy the newly built Vice President's Enclave behind North Block, next to the Parliament complex. He had shifted there last April, while his predecessors occupied a bungalow on Maulana Azad Road.
He suddenly declared his resignation in the late night of July 21, the opening day of the monsoon session, on health grounds.
In the letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar wrote, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”
But the Opposition claimed that Dhankhar quit in the wake of government pressure after accepting an Opposition-sponsored notice for the impeachment of high court judge Justice Yashwant Verma.
Since his resignation, Dhankhar has not yet met any Opposition leader.
He has strong connections with the Chautala clan, successors of the late Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal. Dhankhar was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1989 from Jhunjhunu on a Janata Dal ticket that had included anti-Congress leaders like Devi Lal and VP Singh.
