Former Rajya Sabha MP and journalist Chandan Mitra passes away at 65

He had been a long-time BJP supporter and a close aide of former party supremo LK Advani. He was elected as a Rajya Sabha member in 2010. His term ended in 2016. After he failed to get another Rajya Sabha term on BJP ticket, he chose to join the Trinamool Congress in 2018.

Former Rajya Sabha MP and senior journalist Chandan Mitra passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 65.

Mitra was a two-time Rajya Sabha MP. He resigned as printer and publisher of The Pioneer newspaper in June 2021.

He had been a long-time BJP supporter and a close aide of former party supremo LK Advani. He was elected as a Rajya Sabha member in 2010. His term ended in 2016. After he failed to get another Rajya Sabha term on BJP ticket, he chose to join the Trinamool Congress in 2018.

His son Kushan Mitra, in a tweet, confirmed the demise of the veteran journalist saying, “since it is already out there; Dad passed away late last night. He had been suffering for a while.”

Condolences poured in, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who tweeted, “Shri Chandan Mitra Ji will be remembered for his intellect and insights. He distinguished himself in the world of media as well as politics. Anguished by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Other political figures like Ram Madhav also took to Twitter to express condolences for his family. Mitra’s long-time friend and Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta also took to Twitter to express his grief.
