Farmers Protest on Delhi borders to be 'postponed' for now, but not ending yet: SKM

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Wednesday said that the farmer's protest has not yet ended, it has been just postponed for now. The SKM has also agreed to the draft proposal prepared by the Central government. The farmers' body is expected to make a major announcement on Thursday

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Wednesday said that the farmer's protest has not yet ended, it has been just postponed for now. The umbrella body that has been spearheading the farmer's agitation along the borders of the national capital over the farm laws and other demands of the farmers, has also said that the protest will continue till the government resolves all demands of the farmers including the Minimum Support Price (MSP) issue. The SKM has also agreed to the draft proposal prepared by the Central government. The farmers' body is expected to make a major announcement on Thursday after yet another likely meeting to decide on the further strategy of the movement.

Key Points:


1. Apart from the MSP issue, the farmers' body, has also raised other demands including the resignation of Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni over the horrendous Lakhimpur-Kheri incident in which  5 farmers were crushed under the speeding car and killed, earlier in October this year.

2. The draft resolution from the Union has also said that the government has agreed to cancel the FIRs against farmers in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand with immediate effect. The resolution also said that the newly formulated committee for MSP will also have representatives of the SKM.

3. The government has also agreed to present the Electricity Bill in Parliament only after discussing the matter with the representatives of the SKM and has given a nod to the farmers on compensation.

4. "Agreement was reached upon on the draft proposal sent by the government. After receiving a formal letter in this regard from the government, a meeting of farmer leaders will be held tomorrow (Thursday) in a decision on the suspension of the agitation is likely to be taken," the farm SKM farm leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni said.
