The President of the UN General Assembly, Dennis Francis, has commenced a five-day visit to India. During his visit, he will engage in discussions with Indian leaders on various key issues, including geopolitical tensions and India's involvement with the United Nations.
Expressing his delight at arriving in New Delhi on the day of the grand inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, Francis conveyed his eagerness for fruitful discussions on peace, progress, prosperity, and sustainability. During his stay, he plans to hold bilateral meetings with Indian government officials, engage with civil society and think tanks, and participate in events related to sustainability, multilateralism, accessibility, and digital public infrastructure.
The discussions with Indian leaders are expected to focus on the priorities of the President of the UN General Assembly, ongoing geopolitical tensions, and India's contributions to the United Nations. The visit will also include a meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi and a visit to Jaipur to appreciate the work of an NGO providing affordable and accessible prosthetic limbs.
The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that this visit provides a unique opportunity to strengthen ties between India and the UN, especially with the General Assembly. Dennis Francis, belonging to the diplomatic service of Trinidad and Tobago, has outlined his presidency priorities as peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability, with the theme of his presidency being 'Rebuilding trust and reigniting solidarity.'
