Gujarat govt informs Supreme Court: Bilkis Bano given Rs 50 Lakh and job; Bano says she's not satisfied

Bilkis Bano has moved an application in the Supreme Court and expressed her dissatisfaction with the compliance of the order in connection with the provision of accommodation and job offer provided by the state government.

On Monday the Gujarat government informed the Supreme Court that it has complied with the court’s order and paid Rs 50 Lakh and also provided a job to Bilkis Bano, who was gang-raped during the 2002 riots in the state.

Bilkis Bano has moved an application in the Supreme Court and expressed her dissatisfaction with the compliance of the order in connection with the provision of accommodation and job offer provided by the state government.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the state government, contended before a bench headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde and Justices A.S. Bopanna and V. Ramasubramanian that, "this petition is misconceived."

  • On September 30, the Supreme Court had ordered the Gujarat government to pay Rs 50 lakh to Bilkis Bano, Gujarat communal riots victim, within two weeks.
 
  • Bano was pregnant when she was gang-raped by a mob, which also killed seven members of her family at Randhikpur village near Ahmedabad on March 3, 2002.
 
  • Earlier, the Bombay High Court had upheld the life imprisonment of 11 persons accused in the Bilkis Bano gang-rape case.
 
  • In the application through advocate Shobha Gupta, Bano cited that the state government has not properly complied with the top court order.
 
  • Bano said the government has only given 50 square metre of land, which is recorded as a garden area zone and she has been offered a job of a peon in the irrigation department on a contract basis.
