ASI Requests Varanasi Court to Extend Sealing of Gyanvapi Survey Report by 4 Weeks

In response, the court has reserved its decision on the matter and is scheduled to announce its ruling on Thursday regarding the provision of the report to the involved parties in the original Shringar Gauri suit (Rakhi Singh and others vs. Uttar Pradesh state and others).

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has taken a significant step by filing an application in the Varanasi district court, urging the Judge to delay the disclosure of the Gyanvapi mosque survey report for a period of four weeks.

In response, the court has reserved its decision on the matter and is scheduled to announce its ruling on Thursday regarding the provision of the report to the involved parties in the original Shringar Gauri suit (Rakhi Singh and others vs. Uttar Pradesh state and others).

Represented by their advocate, four women plaintiffs have requested access to the survey report, advocating for its disclosure.

The ASI's application stems from its obligation, as dictated by the Allahabad High Court's order on December 19, 2023, in a separate but interconnected case (Ancient Idol of Swayambhu Lord Vishweshwar vs. Anjuman Intezamia Masjid). Per this order, ASI must present the same survey report before the Civil Judge (Senior Division) of the fast track court.

Amit Srivastava, the government counsel, elucidated, "We have presented justifications for the request to postpone the proceedings related to the unsealing and disclosure of the sealed survey report submitted by ASI for a duration of four weeks."

The ASI's application underscores concerns about potential rumors and misinterpretations that might circulate in the public domain should the report be unsealed and disclosed prior to complying with the High Court's order.

Srivastava highlighted the ASI's diligent efforts in adhering to the High Court order by diligently working on submitting a copy of the survey report. To ensure a smooth process, he emphasized the necessity for maintaining the sealed status of the report before the current court until compliance is achieved. Additionally, he emphasized the requirement for additional survey work in areas that were initially overlooked in the ASI survey.

The property housing the Gyanvapi mosque encompasses three plots — 1930, 1931, and 1932. Currently, the ASI has conducted survey work in plot 1930. However, demands from the Hindu side encompass surveys for plots 1931 and 1932, including the wuzukhana and the area beneath the mosque's central dome.
