21-year old Arya Rajendran is all set to create history as she is appointed Mayor of the Thiruvananthapuram corporation at the 2020 Kerala local body elections, making her the youngest mayor in the country.
Beginning her political journey at the young of 10, Arya joined Bala Sangham, the world's largest children organisation and currently holds the position of state president in the organisation. Her father, an electrician and her mother, an LIC agent had been members of Communist Party of India (Marxist) for a long time.
Being associated with the children's wing of the party from a very young age, her parents used to take her to party programmes and she firmly believes in the ideals of the party.
A BSc student, Arya represented the CPI (M) from Mudavanmugal ward in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, also the youngest candidate in 2020 civic body elections and bagged 2872 votes defeating the UDF candidate Sreekala by a margin of 549 votes.
Incidentally, this was also the first time, Arya could exercise her right to vote in the local body elections due to her age.
A confident speaker and diligent in her efforts, Arya has big plans for her ward Mudavanmugal, prioritising waste management and setting up a primary health care centre.
