The air was filled with high tension at the Thiruvananthapuram airport during the wee hours on Thursday, when an Air India flight from Mumbai made an emergency landing following a bomb threat.
The incident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. after the pilot of the Air India flight informed the airport authorities about the threat. It is yet unclear how the pilot received the threat; more details are awaited.
The threat led to high alert at the airport and bomb squad and other emergency services were summoned.
The plane landed safely at about 8 a.m. and then was taken to a safe area of the airport. All 136 passengers and crew members have been evacuated safely.
The aircraft was totally checked with regard to baggages and cargo. Bomb experts did an extensive examination of the aircraft and reported that so far nothing unusual had been detected, thus indicating the plane was in normal condition.
Security at the airport has been heightened, yet operations are continuing as usual. The authorities suggested the threat might be a hoax, though the exact details and origin of the threat are still pending.
The passengers are expected to disembark soon and proceed to destinations. Further updates on the threat and its origins are awaited.
