2 terrorists killed in Shopian encounter

Kashmir's trouble continues, two terrorists killed today, one policeman martyred yesterday in South Kashmir

Two terrorists have been killed in an ongoing encounter with security forces in South Kashmir's Shopian district, police said on Tuesday.

The gunfight started on Monday after security forces cordoned off an area in Melhora and launched a search operation on the basis of specific information about terrorist presence.

As the security forces zeroed in on the spot where terrorists were hiding they came under a heavy volume of fire that triggered the encounter. One terrorist was killed on Monday evening, the other early Tuesday following an overnight standoff.

"Two unidentified terrorists have been killed in the Shopian encounter. Searches are underway," the police said.

Yesterday, some suspected terrorists gunned down a police inspector in the Chandpora Bijbehara area in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Monday. The inspector was identified as Mohammad Ashraf Bhat, a resident of Chandpora Kanelwan.

The police told that after receiving gunshot injuries the police officer was moved to a nearby hospital but he succumbed to his death in the hospital.

A wreath-laying ceremony led by IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar was held at DPL Anantnag, where floral tributes were paid to the martyr.
