Rishi Sunak: Know the Indian-origin British politician who could be next UK PM

Rishi Sunak, began his career as an analyst for the investment bank Goldman Sachs between 2001 and 2004. Later from 2006-2009, he worked for the hedge fund management firm The Children's Investment Fund Management by becoming its partner. He also worked as a director of the investment firm Catamaran Ventures, owned by his father-in-law, Indian businessman N. R. Narayana Murthy. In 2014, he began his political career as a member of the Conservative Party and served as an MP from Richmond (Yorks)

Rishi Sunak is an Indian origin British politician, who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer for nearly two years. On July 5 2022, he resigned as Chancellor of the Exchequer and on July 8 he announced his candidacy to replace former Prime Minister of UK Boris Johnson in the Conservative party leadership election.

Sunak may become the next Prime Minister of the UK as he is one of the frontrunners in the race to the UK prime minister’s office and has won the most number of votes (88) in the first round.

In 2014, he began his political career as a member of the Conservative Party and served as an MP from Richmond (Yorks). From 2019 to 2020 he also served as the Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Later from 2020 to 5th July 2022 he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Now after tendering his resignation from the post of Chancellor he announced that he would stand as a candidate in the Conservative party leadership election to replace Boris Johnson.

Rishi Sunak was born in Southampton on 12 May 1980 to Yashvir and Usha Sunak. His father was born and raised in the Colony and Protectorate of Kenya (present-day Kenya), while his mother Usha was born in Tanganyika (which later became part of Tanzania). His grandparents were born in Punjab Province, British India, and emigrated from East Africa with their children to the UK in the 1960s. His father Yashvir was a general practitioner, and Usha was a pharmacist who ran a local pharmacy.

Rishi Sunak attended Stroud School, a preparatory school in Romsey, Hampshire, and Winchester College. He studied philosophy, politics and economics at Lincoln College, Oxford. In 2006, he gained an MBA from Stanford University.

In 2009, Sunak married Akshata Murty, the daughter of the Indian billionaire N. R. Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys. The couple is blessed with 2 daughters Krishna and Anoushka.
