Kavita Shukla: Meet the youngest girl to win INDEX Design award

Kavita was born in Germany to Indian parents. She has completed her schooling at a High School in Ellicott City, Maryland. She holds a BA degree from Harvard University. Kavita is the inventor of FRESHPAPER which is today known as FRESH GLOWthat Co. It is a sheet of paper that is induced with the blend of organic species.

Kavita Shukla is the founder and CEO of the FRESH GLOW Co. She is also the inventor of FRESHPAPER, it is a low-cost, compostable paper infused with edible organic spices. She is a designer, an inventor, and an entrepreneur. Kavita has four patents in her name. Her idealist approach is  “a good idea doesn’t have to be trendy”. FreshPaper is used by farmers and families worldwide.

At the age of 13, she created a lab safety device for bottles containing hazardous materials. She patented the device, dubbing it the “Smart Lid.”

While Kavita was in her school years she became interested in the potential uses of an Indian herb called fenugreek in preserving food and fighting bacterial growth. She kept on exploring its antibacterial and antifungal activities. She observed that food wrapped in fenugreek-treated paper lasts four to six weeks longer than food protected by traditional wrapping. In 2002 he obtained a patent in her name for this natural formula of Fenugreek-treated paper sheets.

In 2022, Shukla was the winner of the Lemelson-MIT Invention Apprenticeship.

She has spoken about the power of simple ideas at the White House, the United Nations, SXSW, the Global Entrepreneurship Congress, TEDxManhattan, Harvard University, MIT, and Johns Hopkins University.

She has received the 'Design to Improve Life Award' which is known as the world's most recognized prize for design. She is the youngest female to receive the INDEX Design award.  Her work has been featured by The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vogue, Oprah Magazine, Glamour, The Today Show, and CNN.

In a statement she said, "for the first time, I realized that spoilage was a huge problem for people right in my own backyard. As I learned more about it, I found out that over 50 million Americans are food insecure”.

FRESHPAPER runs a campaign which is Fenugreek Buy a Pack, Give a Pack initiative. It promises to donate one package of FreshPaper to food banks or nonprofits in less-economically developed countries for every package sold.

Kavita has been featured as one of Fast Company's “7 Entrepreneurs Changing the World.” She has also been named to the Forbes “30 under 30” list and TIME Magazine's "5 Most Innovative Women in Food."
