Vineeta Singh: Know the woman behind the famous 'Sugar Cosmetics' beauty brand

Vineeta Singh was born in the year 1984 in Anand.  Her father was a scientist at AIMS, New Delhi, and her mother is a Ph.D. holder. She completed her schooling at Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram. She did her graduation from IIT Madras in electrical engineering and MBA from IIM Ahemdabad. She hasinterned with Deutsche Bank for 3 months as a summer student.

Vineeta Singh is one of the leading entrepreneurs in India. She became a household name after her debut on Television as a judge on popular reality show "Shark Tank". Vineeta is the CEO and co-founder of the Sugar cosmetics which was established in the year 2015 as a D-2-C(direct-to-consumer) brand. Vineeta Singh has a net worth of $ 7 million and earns approximately 22 crores a year from the famous beauty brand, according to media reports. The company had clocked over 130 crore revenue approximately in FY21. In a competitive market with big brands like Lakme, L'oreal, and many others in India, Vineeta's brand Sugar cosmetic has managed to fit well into the hearts of audiences in a short span of  seven years.

At the age of 23, Vineeta made headlines and as found a place on the cover of  THE WEEK magazine as the first postgraduate in India who refused a whopping amount of 1 crore yearly placement offer by a worldwide investment company. Instead of accepting the job offer, she decided  to start her own HR services company and launched a bootstrap firm that provided background verification services to its customers. Initially, she earned 10k monthly. In the year 2007, she was appointed as a Director in Quetzal Online Private Limited where she worked for about 5 years. After that, In 2012, she became the co-founding member of Fab Bag brand and in the year 2015, she became the CEO of today's top beauty brand Sugar cosmetics.

Vineeta Singh along with her husband started this Made in India cosmetics brand in the year 2015. The brand focused on manufacturing products that suit the Indian skin tone and texture. The vision behind making made-in-India beauty was to provide Indian audiences with the right shade for their skin type which they have always relied on foreign beauty products. The company generated a buzz in Indian markets with social media advertisement campaigns, which targeted the youth at most.

“I always felt strongly about building something with women as the core customer, so when my first startup didn’t scale, I decided to launch a beauty subscription company with my co-founder, Kaushik, in 2012. The 200,000 women who shared their detailed beauty preferences with us were at the heart of our pivot to SUGAR Cosmetics, which launched as a direct-to-consumer makeup brand in 2015,” Vineeta Singh once told Entreprenuer.com.

 Sugar Cosmetics is today one of the leading cosmetic brands of India. Sugar cosmetics today has a distribution network of more than 35,000 points of sale in more than 130 cities.The brand started at first to be a digital-first beauty product market but now the company has crossed 130+ offline stores in India.  

She was featured on the cover page of Forbes Most Powerful Women in Business and also featured in various business magazines. She was also facilitated with The Economic Times 40 Under Forty Award 2020 and is also among the top 100 mindful women of the world.

Vineeta is also a judge at a television reality show Shark Tank India. The show is the first reality show on Indian television that is focussed on business, new business ideas, and startups are introduced by people at this platform and judged by the top entrepreneurs of India.

Vineeta Singh married Kaushik Mukherjee on 4 December 2011. The couple is blessed with two boys, Vikrant Mukherjee(the elder son) and Ranveer Mukherjee(the younger son).

Vineeta is also a sportsperson and she has participated in more than 14 marathons to date, including the Comrades Run of 89 km for three consecutive years in South Africa. She has actively taken part in various running, cycling, marathon, and badminton events.
