Why Amanda Seyfried Rejected a Role in 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

The 39-year-old actress, who originally auditioned for the Gamora role before Zoe Saldana was cast, explained why she turned down the chance.

Amanda Seyfried revealed last week that she passed up a spot in Guardians of the Galaxy for fear that the film would end up being "Marvel's first bomb," suggesting that it's centered around a "talking tree and a talking raccoon."

The 39-year-old actress, who originally auditioned for the Gamora role before Zoe Saldana was cast, explained why she turned down the chance. One of her biggest concerns was having to spend so much time in the makeup chair every day to get the character's green complexion.

Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Seyfried said, "I was actually terrified of being stuck and colored differently because of the length (of time)." She went on, thinking about the massive opportunity, "It was a huge opportunity. I had just met (director) James (Gunn) face-to-face. He is great. Apparently, someone claimed he didn't recall, but that is absolutely true.". I did get the offer for it and I considered it for a few days."

Seyfried also mentioned personal grounds on which she declined the role, such as the possibility of staying in London half the year. She was also interested in another film, A Million Ways to Die in the West with Seth MacFarlane, which seemed like a good project then.

Her choice was also motivated by concern over the possibility of how her Hollywood career would be affected. "Let's also keep in mind that to be in the first Marvel film that bombs is not good for your career," she stated. "I assumed that because it was about a talking raccoon and a talking tree that this would be Marvel's first bomb and me and Chris Pratt would never work again. I was wrong! But I was simply being clever. It's not courageous."

Though Guardians of the Galaxy became a huge hit, spawning a franchise with two sequels, Seyfried has no regrets. She praised the director James Gunn, stating, "He's a genius and he's fun and he's a wonderful filmmaker, and he can make anything work. But I was way too scared. I was at a precarious moment in my career and I didn't want to suffer for the work."

She also stated that she felt her choice was the best for her then. "Sitting there (in the makeup chair) four-and-a-half hours a day every morning didn't sound like it was going to be a blast. I had done some green screen work and it wasn't my best or my cup of tea at the time. I don't regret anything. I made that choice for me.". It was good for me then and it was good for me now.

Lastly, she expressed her endorsement of Saldana and the rest of the cast, stating, "I also think that Zoe (Saldana) and Chris and everybody who's a part of that movie are having the best time and it worked for them, and I love that. And I love that I was able to stay with my gut."
