The White House is urging legislative action to protect individuals from the rising threat of deepfakes generated by artificial intelligence. The call for legislation comes in the wake of the viral spread of fake images of Taylor Swift on social media platforms, an incident deemed "alarming" by White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. She emphasized the Biden administration's prioritization of AI-related issues and urged Congress to take legislative measures to address the problem.
The fake images of Taylor Swift gained widespread attention on social media platform X, accumulating 45 million views before being removed. The incident highlighted the challenges posed by deepfakes and the platform's initial slow response, allowing the post to remain online for approximately 17 hours.
Jean-Pierre underscored the need for legislation to address such issues, stating, "There should be legislation, obviously, to deal with this issue." She also emphasized the role of social media platforms in enforcing their own rules to prevent the dissemination of non-consensual and harmful content.
Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella joined the conversation, describing the explicit Swift AI fakes as "alarming and terrible." In an interview with NBC Nightly News, Nadella stressed the urgency of addressing this issue swiftly.
Taylor Swift is reportedly considering legal action against the website responsible for generating the deepfakes. The incident highlights the growing importance of regulatory measures to curb the misuse of AI technology and protect individuals from the potential harms posed by deepfake content.
