Tom Cruise in Preliminary Talks for 'Days of Thunder' Sequel

'variety' reported that the Days of Thunder is an iconic 1990 racing-drama film, under director Tony Scott, from back when Jerry Bruckheimer was producing for then-pairing late partners himself and Don Simpson.

Sources reported this week that Hollywood actor Tom Cruise, who starred as Ethan Hunt in the final installment of 'Mission: Impossible 7,' was in early stage discussions with Paramount for a Days of Thunder sequel.

No other creatives are set, and Tom's full slate, which includes promoting 'Mission: Impossible 8', filming Alejandro G. Inarritu's next film, and developing another 'Top Gun' movie, keeps this project a long way off from starting its ignition.

'Variety' notes that Bruckheimer, who also produced 'Top Gun: Maverick', has also been in talks regarding returning for the project, according to the sources.

In fact, the first film even opens with a prologue describing Cole Trickle. This is no clichéd marketing ploy- he is an impeccably named scrappy race car driver recruited to a new NASCAR team led by an enigmatic retired racing legend played by Robert Duvall. Cruise's involvement in the film is extensive: He received his very first and, to this date, only official writing credit on the film developing the story with screenwriter Robert Towne.

And it is where he met Nicole Kidman whom he married for 11 years, with whom also happens to have made her Hollywood debut, playing the neurosurgeon in love with Cole.

The film opened relatively meagerly at the box office (for Cruise), taking $157.9 million in unadjusted grosses and received a chilly reception at critics' desks, though it has risen in estimation since. Racing movies have also recently become all the rage, with last year's 'Ford v Ferrari' followed by Brad Pitt's upcoming F1 film, which is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who is best known for 'Top Gun: Maverick'.
