Acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh has collaborated with acclaimed screenwriter David Koepp to introduce a spine-tingling supernatural thriller, Presence, to Indian viewers.
Scheduled for a special release via PVR INOX Pictures on March 28th, the film is guaranteed to provide a chilling, suspenseful experience, presented from the point of view of an invisible, watching presence.
Presence has a formidable cast, such as Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, West Mulholland, Callina Liang, Eddy Maday, and Julia Fox, who all take charge in this surreal and eerie tale. The film takes a family settling into a new home where an invisible force silently watches them have their most intimate and awkward moments.
The presence appears especially obsessed with Chloe, a teenage girl who is estranged from her family. Throughout the story, the unseen presence becomes increasingly intrusive, and its real motives start to surface, setting the tone for escalating tension and emotional turmoil.
Soderbergh also revealed the chilling real-life genesis of the movie: "Presence emerged from something that occurred in the house my wife Jules [Asner, Soderbergh's wife] and I own in Los Angeles. It is an actual fact that someone died in this house prior to our taking occupancy. There's a legend that the victim was a mother murdered by her daughter. We were aware of this when we purchased the house.". After that, there were the occasional weird moments, such as 'Did I leave that light on?' but nothing that was ever threatening.
It didn't really register at the time." Soderbergh's experience, however, took a turn when a house sitter had a weird experience. "One night, the house sitter was sitting in front of the TV, and they sensed something strange—like a presence.". They glanced up and saw a silhouette of a woman walk across the end of the hallway into the bedroom. The house sitter automatically called out Jules' name, then realized Jules wasn't around. That was why they were house sitting. The house sitter called to Jules, who then recounted the tale to us. The house sitter said, 'Well, what the hell?
Why didn't you tell me that?'" This disturbing incident inspired the concept for *Presence*, which has since been adapted into a supernatural thriller by Soderbergh, with Koepp's concise, tense script. With its disturbing atmosphere and emotional resonance, Presence will surely enthrall and unsettle viewers in equal proportion.
